Dr. Thomas Burns and Dr. Robert Tang have explored AI systems from a geometric perspective to better understand their properties, unveiling a novel way to tackle AI problems using geometric concepts.

A fundamental component of their study is the utilization of gridworlds, which are structured environments comprising of square cells where individual agents or objects like koalas and beach balls can occupy the cells. In these gridworlds, AI agents can navigate, solve puzzles, and pursue rewards by moving between adjacent tiles. The study of their movements and strategies in gridworlds provides valuable insights for various AI applications, including coordinating the movements of autonomous cars and warehouse robots.

By establishing ‘state complexes’ through repeated actions within the gridworlds, researchers were able to represent all possible configurations as a single geometric object. This approach allowed for the examination of the systems using mathematical tools encompassing geometry, topology, and combinatorics.
